Is New YouTube A Good Idea?

Dec 2, 2011 by Shaun Smylski

New YouTube launched today. Better than ever before with its new friendly UI, making it easier to navigate. We are happy with this new development.

While most will be curious about the new functionality, we are more curious about how people will react to the change. Unlike Facebook's random UI changes from now and again, this one was one drastic leap, with a whole new aesthetic. Not to say that the old YouTube had any style before.

You will not see white anymore, now its grey, which removes contrast from reading and viewing videos. This could be bad for those who have preference to reading on white or will at least want a lighter shade of grey. Good or bad you think?

There are bevels and shadows. Beautiful on the buttons, but they almost went unrealistically overboard with the shadows on the borders. Even though it is another aesthetically pleasing quality of new web design, it may be somewhat bordering on trendy and repeated too often on the site.

Lastly, the new dark sidebar and textures. The layout needed more variety in background colors to separate all the content types and the dark sidebar makes a big difference in a good way. Perhaps you can’t tell that there is a texture on the grey background, but there is a subtle noise texture to it, exactly like Apple's website. They didn't rip it entirely, but it is the same shade of blu-ish grey. Something that is nice if only you didn't have to read the small 12px font on it.

All in all, this is a good step to a friendlier user experience. We are glad to see it coming along finally.
